In April 2023, smash ultimate's monthly active playerbase on start.gg hit an all time high of 43,156 players. By monthly active players, I mean the number of players that attended atleast one event in that month. Here is the graph of monthly active players over time. Of course, this doesn't exactly mean the number of active competitive players was at an all time high in April because not all tournaments have occured on start.gg and there has been a subtle shift away from challonge towards start.gg over the past few years but almost all tournaments are on start.gg. So, it suffices to say that the game is thriving and doing just as well now, if not better than it did in 2019.
